The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unanimously confirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, despite growing opposition from other continental football bodies. This decision was announced on Thursday, August 7th, 2026, the same day UEFA declared its commitment to boycotting future World Cups at all levels while Infantino remains in office.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe expressed appreciation for Infantino's support of African football over the years and endorsed the recent “Joint Update” issued by Infantino and FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafstrom. However, Motsepe emphasized the importance of good governance and transparency in global football.

In a statement, CAF's Executive Committee (EXCO) said, “The CAF EXCO unanimously reconfirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino and thanked him for his support for African football over ‌the years.” This stance places CAF at odds with counterparts in Europe, North America, and Asia, where criticism of Infantino has intensified amid controversies surrounding the World Cup.

The support comes as Infantino seeks re-election in March 2027, with CAF’s backing providing a significant boost amid challenges from other football confederations. Motsepe had also praised Infantino days before the emergence of the World Cup sell-off controversy.
