On Thursday, August 7th, 2026, former President Donald Trump signed executive orders aimed at denying US citizenship to children born in the United States to so-called “birth tourists.” This move marks his second attempt to restrict the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship, just weeks after the US Supreme Court rejected his initial, broader effort to deny automatic citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants and temporary foreign residents.

The right to birthright citizenship has been guaranteed since the 14th Amendment was ratified in 1868. Trump's new orders come about five weeks after the Supreme Court struck down his previous order targeting citizenship for children of non-citizens.

In addition to these developments, President Trump is scheduled to convene executives from some of the world’s largest mining companies at the State Department on Friday, August 8th, as his administration intensifies efforts to secure domestic and allied supplies of critical minerals. These minerals are needed to replenish US weapons stockpiles depleted during the Iran conflict and to reduce dependence on Chinese supply chains.

Separately, Trump has declined to say whether Ohio Republican Max Miller, who is seeking reelection despite domestic abuse allegations by his ex-wife, should step aside by tomorrow, August 8th.
