Dozens of students and job aspirants have been protesting since July 25, 2026, at a stadium in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, demanding an overhaul of the state’s government examination system. Some protesters have resorted to hunger strikes and sleeping outdoors to press their demands.

The movement is driven by frustration over the infrequent advertisement of government exams; since Jharkhand’s creation in 2000, the examination has been advertised only three times despite hundreds of vacant posts remaining unfilled. A 27-year-old protester from a farming family in Bokaro shared that she has spent years preparing for the civil service exam, hoping for the security of a government job, and declared, “We will not leave until we get it, even if it costs us our lives.”

Deepika Pandey Singh, a minister in the Jharkhand government, told the BBC that investigations into the allegations of irregularities had begun even before the current protests started. While many protesters insist that the movement remains independent and are wary of political claims, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the youth movement behind recent protests in Delhi, has announced its support for the Jharkhand protests.

Protesters welcome political support but emphasize that the movement is theirs.
