On Friday, August 7th, 2026, former President Donald Trump publicly urged Congress to pass the "Protect College Sports Act," warning that women's and Olympic sports could disappear without it. Writing on Truth Social, Trump called the bill "a great Bill" and expressed hope that the Senate would remain in Washington, D.C. until its passage.
Trump stated, "Nobody has done more to protect Women Athletes than me — and this Bill CLEARLY protects the Laws in 27 States protecting Women's Sports, and banning Men from Women's Sports." He further emphasized the urgency, saying, "We have to get that done. If we don’t, we’re very foolish. Nobody knows what will happen. We’re in Never-Never Land. We’re not going to let that be happening. We’re not going to let that happen to these great people and others."
He also called on the House and Senate to come together, ideally in a bipartisan manner, to send the bill to his desk for signing, stating, "I think we have no choice."
These remarks followed similar comments made by Trump the previous day while welcoming U.S. Olympians to the White House Rose Garden.
In addition, the White House released an official memo on Friday to clarify misconceptions about the bill, stating that the Protect College Sports Act would not override state laws preventing biological men from competing in women's sports. The memo affirmed that states retain the authority to legislate on this issue.
Education Secretary Linda McMahon also discussed the Supreme Court's recent ruling upholding transgender sports bans, underscoring the need to protect women's sports. She highlighted concerns about fairness, lost opportunities for female athletes, and safety in locker rooms, while criticizing Democrats for dismissing these issues. McMahon reaffirmed the Trump administration's commitment to defending women's rights under Title IX.
The Protect College Sports Act is currently navigating the legislative process in Congress. If it clears both the House and Senate, it will proceed to the president's desk for signing.
