On Saturday, August 8, 2026, Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, blocked a GOP-backed voter ID bill proposed by Jon Husted. This occurred during a late-night session amid a flurry of last-minute legislative activity in Washington, D.C.

Despite Schumer and other Senate Democrats having expressed support for voter ID in the past, including its inclusion in their Freedom to Vote legislation several years ago, they rejected this key component of the SAVE America Act. Several states represented by Democratic senators also have voter ID laws.

Republicans made a final attempt to gain Democratic backing for a stripped-down version of the voter ID bill after it became clear that President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority would not be passed or even considered before Congress adjourned. Senator Mike Lee, a Republican from Utah and chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, was involved in related legislative discussions.

Schumer has stated, "We've got many Democrats, who have said, ‘I’m just fine with voter ID,’" and acknowledged hearing arguments from colleagues who support voter ID but oppose the specific bill. Nevertheless, every Senate Democrat voted against the GOP bill.
