Canadian officials declared a state of emergency in British Columbia on Saturday, August 9th, 2026, after wildfires forced more than 20,000 people to evacuate their homes. The fires have rapidly spread, with 105 blazes currently burning across the province.

British Columbia Premier David Eby described the intensity of the fires, quoting a fire official who compared the blaze to "a bomb going off." He detailed flames engulfing a 100-foot (30-meter) tree and reaching 200 feet above, with the fire creating its own weather system that generates lightning. Eby also noted that some people became trapped due to rapidly changing conditions and required rescue.

One of the most affected areas is the Summerland district, where the fire expanded to approximately 9,500 hectares (23,500 acres), prompting the evacuation of all 12,000 residents. The Summerland fire is among many challenging emergency crews throughout British Columbia.

According to British Columbia Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar, the province has experienced 70 new wildfires in the past week alone. Nationwide, fires have scorched 4 million hectares in Canada in 2026, as reported by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.

Homes and properties have been lost due to the fires, underscoring the severity of the situation.
