On Saturday, July 4th, 2026, Washington, D.C. hosted the largest fireworks display in history as part of the nation's 250th birthday celebrations. The event, known as Freedom 250, featured 840,537 fireworks launched from multiple sites around the National Mall and the Potomac River, creating a 40-minute spectacular show.

Nearly two months after President Donald Trump proclaimed the event would be the "LARGEST FIREWORKS SHOW IN HISTORY," Guinness World Records confirmed the record this week. The display was organized by Event Strategies Inc and executed by Freedom 250 and Pyrotecnico, Inc, both U.S.-based companies.

Despite weather delays that required evacuations from the National Mall, hundreds of thousands of spectators witnessed the fireworks that began just before midnight. President Trump estimated the crowd size was initially 350,000 but was reduced to 150,000 due to the weather.

The previous record for the largest fireworks celebration was held by a megachurch’s 2016 New Year's Eve show, which featured 810,904 fireworks, according to The Washington Post.

The White House issued a statement, as reported by the Post, saying, "No other president in history could have accomplished the incredible feat that President Trump did at our Nation’s historic 250th birthday celebration, which included an incredible air show, a record-breaking fireworks display, and an inspiring speech delivered before hundreds of thousands of American patriots."

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum explained in June that the fireworks would be launched from several sites due to the immense scale of the event.

The celebration also included President Trump's speeches at national landmarks, a gathering of military veterans including a 103-year-old World War II veteran, and an international naval review in New York Harbor.
