Wildfires in the western Canadian province of British Columbia have intensified significantly, with the BC Wildfire Service reporting 102 active fires by Sunday morning, up from 70 the previous day. Nearly half of these fires remain out of control amid continuous hot and dry conditions that have led to extreme fire behavior and severely poor visibility, hampering firefighting efforts.

The Bald Range fire, which rapidly expanded on Saturday, has engulfed the Summerland area, home to approximately 12,000 residents, consuming nearly 10,341 hectares (25,552 acres) of land by early Sunday.

British Columbia Minister of Emergency Management and Climate Readiness Kelly Greene declared a state of emergency on Saturday in response to the escalating situation.

More than 20,000 people have been forced to evacuate the affected areas. Canadian media reported that over 50 people were airlifted from the community of Faulder. British Columbia Premier David Eby warned of the fire's dangerous and unpredictable nature and confirmed that air evacuations are underway for those isolated behind the fire perimeter. He stated, "To everyone affected, you are not facing this alone, the entire province is with you."

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police announced they are "investigating to confirm" a possible fatality related to the fires. Officials have not yet released casualty or damage figures, nor a list of missing persons.

The situation remains critical as firefighters continue battling the blazes under challenging conditions.
