Donald Trump has acknowledged that the renovation of the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool under his administration was rushed and involved contractor errors. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, August 10th, 2026, Trump said the pool’s contractor cut corners to complete the $14 million repainting project in time for its July 4th opening. He described the resulting damage from this as limited to "a very small area" and "relatively inconsequential."

Despite this admission, Trump renewed his claim that broader damage to the pool’s blue coating was caused by vandals. He cited legal testimony from an unnamed US National Park Service (NPS) employee, described as a "highly credible witness," who allegedly saw former Olympic canoeist David Hearn tearing at the pool’s lining. Trump stated, "There was substantial other damage to the Reflecting Pool, also but, unfortunately, there is no video or proof, other than the damage, itself," adding that security cameras have been and are being installed.

Trump expressed frustration after Jeanine Pirro, the US attorney for the District of Columbia and a former Fox News host, moved last month to drop criminal charges against Hearn and others accused of vandalizing the site. US Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, who oversees the NPS, supported the prosecution, stating his department provided expert and eyewitness testimony documenting vandalism. However, Pirro’s office disputed this, saying prosecutors had limited information when Hearn was indicted on July 2nd and later obtained records about installation problems that weakened the vandalism case.

The reflecting pool, which was drained and repainted "American flag blue" as part of the 250th anniversary of America celebrations, has remained fenced off since the damage was discovered. Officials have said it will not reopen before September 10th, 2026.
