US President Donald Trump announced on Monday, August 10th, 2026, that he would demand conflict compensation from Iran as part of any peace negotiations. He cited attacks and killings allegedly backed or perpetrated by Tehran stretching back more than two decades, including Iranian attacks on US targets and payments to families of Iranian protestors killed by authorities over the past 50 years.

Trump's demands also extend to holding the Islamic Republic responsible for deaths and damage caused in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Gaza. He referenced the 2000 bombing of the USS Cole, which he has previously suggested Iran was "probably involved" in.

These new demands come as negotiations to end the war and reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz have stalled, risking further delays to a quick agreement. Trump's announcement was a direct response to Iran's insistence that US payment of war reparations is a pre-condition for resolving the ongoing hostilities.

Despite the tensions, digital media outlet Axios reported that Trump did not express frustration over Iran's delay in reaching an agreement to open the Strait of Hormuz during a recent interview.

Trump also indicated a "low-key" approach to the conflict over the weekend, suggesting he is prepared to let economic pressure mount instead of pursuing further military strikes.

Meanwhile, a statement on Iran's Supreme Leader Khamenei's website announced the appointment of Major General Ali Abdollahi as chief of staff of the armed forces, and Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as Commander-in-Chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps with the rank of major general.
