On Monday, August 10, 2026, former President Donald Trump secured a legal victory when a district judge granted him permission to file a First Amended Complaint in his defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

Trump initially filed the lawsuit in December 2025 in a personal capacity, seeking $10 billion in total damages—$5 billion for defamation and $5 billion for violating Florida’s Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act. The suit challenges the BBC's edited "Panorama" documentary titled "Trump: A Second Chance?" which portrayed Trump's January 6 speech in a misleading manner.

The documentary allegedly stitched together remarks Trump made nearly an hour apart during his address, creating the impression that he instructed his supporters to "fight like hell" at the Capitol shortly before the riot occurred that day. Trump's legal team argues the BBC intentionally and maliciously doctored his speech to interfere with the 2024 Presidential Election.

The BBC had opposed the amendment, claiming Trump missed the deadline and was attempting to delay financial disclosures. However, Judge Altman sided with Trump, allowing the amendment and rendering the BBC's previous motion to dismiss moot.

The issue of the documentary's editing integrity gained further attention following a report by The Telegraph, which revealed excerpts from a whistleblower dossier compiled by Michael Prescott, a communications advisor hired by the BBC to review its editorial standards.

A spokesman for Trump's legal team described the ruling as a "major win" against the "formerly respected and now disgraced BBC."
