Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s open United States Senate seat, is closely associated with Hasan Doğan Piker, a progressive Twitch commentator known for his controversial online presence. Michigan voters face a pivotal choice in the upcoming October-November election, with early voting scheduled from October 24 to November 1, 2026.

El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic primary against Congresswoman Haley Stevens by a margin of 15,697 votes, with Stevens receiving 727,758 votes. Mallory McMorrow, a third candidate who dropped out, still garnered 61,407 votes.

The primary victory has been described as "tainted by many deeply flawed" aspects within the Democratic Party. It was only after El-Sayed’s razor-thin win that several controversial videos of Hasan Piker surfaced online, alongside El-Sayed’s own remarks, including a blunt admission that he "hates" Michigan’s beloved Mackinac Island.

Following the primary, some supporters of Stevens have announced their intention to vote for GOP nominee Mike Rogers, a seven-term congressman from Michigan who retired after chairing the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Rogers is seen as having a narrow path to victory in the general election.

Political commentator Hewitt, who has frequently appeared on major national news networks and moderated multiple Republican debates, has been cited in coverage of the race.
