Jim Nantz, CBS Sports’ lead play-by-play announcer, has publicly addressed the recent OWI arrest of his longtime friend and booth partner, Tony Romo. Romo was arrested by Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies in Wisconsin after showing signs of impairment while driving back from a golf event in July 2026.

Nantz and Romo have worked together since Romo, the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback, signed a 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS Sports in 2020 to become the network’s top NFL analyst. Despite the arrest, Nantz emphasized their enduring friendship, recalling that they have known each other since 2011 when he was invited to Romo’s wedding. "He’s a great friend, continues to be, always will be," Nantz said.

During the "NFL on CBS" Media Day, Nantz was asked about Romo’s status for the upcoming NFL season. While acknowledging the situation, Nantz noted he focused on his own schedule and the upcoming season. J.J. Watt will join Nantz as his new booth partner for the 2026 NFL season.

Reports from OutKick in late July indicated that Romo’s future with CBS might be uncertain beyond his current leave, with doubts about whether he will remain the network’s lead analyst after the 2026 season. Romo is reportedly still owed $72 million on his contract.

Nantz also highlighted the importance of focusing on CBS Sports' presentation and product rather than external issues, stating, "That’s very important to us. The focus should be and needs to be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others."
