Arian Eteghaei, 24, a former student at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), was sentenced on Thursday, August 13, 2026, to 30 years to life in California state prison after a jury found him guilty of forcible rape and forcible sexual penetration. Authorities reported that Eteghaei made a daring escape attempt by bolting from courthouse custody moments after his conviction.

Campus crime data reviewed by Fox News Digital revealed over 100 reported rapes at UCSB between 2022 and 2024. Additionally, two separate sexual assault incidents this spring and summer led to campus-wide warnings and increased concerns about student safety.

One notable case involved an 18-year-old freshman who reported being raped and strangled after meeting a man at a fraternity party before returning to her dorm at Tropicana Gardens in Isla Vista in May 2026. Following this attack, the survivor's family, through attorney Tyrone Maho, publicly appealed for witnesses who attended the fraternity party or were near Tropicana Gardens on the night of May 9 to come forward with information.

Police stated that a woman was walking along a paved access road on UCSB's West Campus around 11:30 a.m. during one of the reported incidents.

The case has been described as requiring years of persistence, careful investigation, and significant support for the victims. Santa Barbara County District Attorney John T. Savrnoch praised the extraordinary courage of the victims who participated in the legal process, stating, "Their strength and willingness to testify allowed the truth to be heard and ultimately allowed the defendant to be held accountable for the serious harm he caused."
