Hong Kong held its first large-scale drill at the revamped Huanggang border crossing on Thursday, August 13, 2026, involving around 1,000 civil servants from more than 20 departments. Participants traveled by public transport to the Hong Kong port area of Huanggang Port, entered the port building, and exited by similar means.
The exercise aimed to assess the management of passenger and vehicular flows, passageway capacity, on-site guidance, traffic control, and supporting measures at the port building and its public transport interchange. Over 120 departures were simulated to mimic the movement of people and vehicles arriving at and leaving the port.
Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung and Transport Minister Mable Chan inspected the drill and expressed satisfaction with the arrangements. Tang noted that "the whole process was largely smooth and controllable, but we also identified some pain points." He added that some participants reported via on-site questionnaires that signage was unclear and queuing flow could be improved. Chan confirmed that the management of passengers boarding, alighting, and queuing, as well as passenger and vehicular flows, operated smoothly during the drill.
The drill marks a significant step in ensuring efficient operation and management at the upgraded Huanggang border crossing.
