Russian forces struck Ukraine’s Izmail port in southern Odesa on Thursday, August 13th, setting off a fire and damaging port infrastructure, according to the Izmail Regional State Administration. This attack occurred a day after Ukrainian forces targeted Russia’s Novorossiysk port, hitting grain terminals and killing three.
Ukraine has reported an acute shortage of United States Patriot missile interceptors since the US entered into conflict with Iran in February 2026. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told CNN that Ukraine needs 5 percent of the US’s Patriot interceptors to survive the winter and 10 percent to neutralize all of Russia’s ballistic projectiles.
Zelenskyy highlighted that Ukraine currently has "two and a half times less interceptors than we had in 2025," while Russia is launching "two times more ballistic missiles per month than they had before." He appealed to American partners to sell Ukraine 5 percent of the missiles in their stockpiles this year.
In addition to the military developments, Zelenskyy mentioned that Ukraine has sent proposals to the US aimed at ending the war with Russia. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned of tit-for-tat seizures of European vessels, and questions arise about the resilience of Russia’s economy despite gains from the Iran conflict.
