Palestinians in Gaza have expressed scepticism about Hamas's declaration it will lay down its weapons in a bid to kickstart the stalled peace process, concerned it will not actually change the situation in the war-ravaged strip.
On Friday, local time, US President Donald Trump heralded Hamas's agreement to "completely disarm", after months of backroom diplomacy to convince the militant group to make the concession.
But Hamas insisted its decision is conditional on Israel upholding its side of the deal, withdrawing its forces from large swathes of Gaza and ending its daily strikes on the strip.
Since the ceasefire was announced in October 2025, Palestinian health authorities in Gaza have reported more than 1,200 people killed in Israeli strikes, many of them civilians, including children.
