Top-seeded Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the third round of Wimbledon after defeating American McCartney Kessler on Wednesday. The world number one, a four-time Grand Slam champion who has reached 14 consecutive major quarterfinals, won the match 6-1, 7-6 (11/9) on Court One.
Sabalenka faced a tough second set, with Kessler missing two set points while serving at 5-3. Sabalenka fought back to force a tie-break, where Kessler again missed two set points before Sabalenka secured the win.
"That was a true battle, and I’m super happy that I was able to stay in that second set to get into that tie-break," Sabalenka said. "She really tested me, and I’m super happy to pass the test."
With this victory, Sabalenka is set to meet 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko in the last-32 round, promising a challenging matchup.
