Russia launched a massive attack on the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, late Sunday, firing 68 missiles and deploying 351 attack drones, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced early Monday on social platform X. The assault resulted in 11 deaths and approximately 60 injuries.
Zelensky reported that emergency services are actively working on rescue and aid efforts, having saved 64 people, including two children. He also highlighted challenges in intercepting Russian ballistic missiles due to insufficient interceptor missile supplies, despite successful defense against drones and cruise missiles.
The attack occurred shortly before Zelensky's scheduled attendance at the annual NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, set for Tuesday and Wednesday. The summit's agenda includes discussions on continued support for Ukraine amid Russia's ongoing invasion.
Following a meeting, the U.S. presidency stated that Russia "should make a deal" to end the war in Ukraine, citing mounting casualties. President Trump is scheduled to meet with Zelensky at 2:30 p.m. local time on Wednesday.
Since Russia's full-scale invasion began in 2022, fighting has caused nearly 56,000 civilian casualties, displaced 3.7 million people internally, and created 5.9 million refugees, according to the Global Conflict Tracker at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Zelensky emphasized, “As long as Patriot missiles remain in our allies’ stockpiles, Russia is only encouraged to keep ‘vanquishing’ residential buildings. The United States and Europe have enough strength to stop this terror.”
