PROVO, Utah — On July 6, 2026, the family of conservative activist Charlie Kirk came face to face with Tyler Robinson, the 23-year-old accused of fatally shooting Kirk, during the first day of a week-long preliminary hearing at the Fourth Judicial District Courthouse in Provo, Utah.

Robinson appeared in court wearing a gray suit, pink shirt, and black tie, with his wrists and ankles cuffed. He was present in the courtroom before media access was granted around 8:55 a.m. During the hearing, videos depicting Kirk's shooting death were shown to the judge and attorneys; Robinson showed no visible reaction when the fatal gunshot was heard.

Utah State Bureau of Investigation Agent David Hull introduced several videos, including some not publicly shown, related to the case. Defense attorney Kathy Nester conducted a brief cross-examination before a lunch recess, questioning whether a police report mentioned the direction from which the shot was fired.

Security was heightened with sniper teams positioned around the courthouse ahead of the hearing. Kirk's family, including Kathryn Kirk, attended the proceedings.

The incident occurred during an outdoor event at Utah Valley University, as documented by Trent Nelson of The Salt Lake Tribune.
