A critical court hearing is scheduled for July 6, 2026, in the 4th District Court in Provo, Utah, to determine if prosecutors have sufficient evidence to move forward with a murder trial against Tyler James Robinson, the alleged assassin of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Robinson, 23, is accused of fatally shooting Kirk, the founder of the conservative youth movement Turning Point USA and a known ally of former President Donald Trump. The fatal shooting occurred in September 2025 during an outdoor rally at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.

Utah prosecutors have stated they possess a substantial amount of evidence against Robinson and intend to seek the death penalty. District Judge Tony Graf will evaluate the evidence presented to decide whether Robinson should be held for trial and if the death penalty pursuit is warranted.

If the case proceeds, prosecutors must prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Robinson is guilty of killing the 31-year-old Kirk.

On the day of the shooting, Robinson allegedly sent a text message to his boyfriend saying, "Drop what you are doing, look under my keyboard," according to Utah County Attorney Jeff Gray.

In October 2025, President Donald Trump posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Kirk, presenting it to his wife, Erika Kirk, during a White House ceremony.
