Utah prosecutors have presented new surveillance footage in the preliminary hearing of Tyler James Robinson, accused of fatally shooting conservative activist Charlie Kirk on 10 September 2025 at Utah Valley University. The video, shown on the second day of the hearing, reportedly depicts Robinson entering the campus, climbing onto a rooftop, running across it, crouching prone, and firing the fatal shot before jumping off the roof while holding an object.

Robinson, 23, faces multiple charges including aggravated murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty and have cited DNA evidence linking Robinson to the weapon used in the killing. The state also alleges Robinson confessed in a note left to his roommate and romantic partner.

The hearing, expected to last a week, aims to determine if there is sufficient evidence for Robinson to stand trial. This week marks the first time Kirk’s family, including his widow Erika Kirk, have been in court with the accused. Donald Trump Jr., a close friend of Kirk’s, attended the hearing as well.

Additional testimony included a former Utah Valley University police officer recounting the moment a gunshot was heard during Kirk’s speech to thousands. Authorities also presented footage showing Robinson’s vehicle on campus in the early hours following the shooting.

Law enforcement noted no shell casings were found near a suspected "sniper pad" on the rooftop, an impression in gravel believed to indicate where a shooter had lain prone with a direct line of sight to Kirk. Some witnesses described a different suspect on the rooftop, and others claimed a bald man was driving the vehicle linked to Robinson.

An officer made contact with Robinson and recorded his license plate during the manhunt shortly after the shooting. Witnesses also reported seeing Robinson reappear on campus about 90 minutes before the shooting, wearing different clothes and walking with a limp.

The hearing continues as the court reviews the evidence to decide on proceeding to trial.
