A recent report published in the Chinese military magazine Naval & Merchant Ships has drawn attention to a series of non-combat incidents affecting some of the US Navy's most advanced warships. The report highlights fires, electrical failures, and propulsion issues on vessels including the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier, the USS Zumwalt destroyer, the Nimitz-class USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, and the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Higgins.
According to the report, these problems have exposed critical vulnerabilities within the fleet, which it attributes to excessive deployments, an overreliance on technology, and inadequate shipyard support. It concludes that the shared underlying issues relate to systemic pressure and shortcomings in equipment management, maintenance support, and damage control.
“These issues – manifesting as non-combat losses – are continuously eroding the fleet’s combat capabilities,” the report states, adding that the risks are increasing.
The report’s findings suggest growing challenges for the US Navy in maintaining operational readiness amid these technical and logistical difficulties.
