Two 13-year-old girls were seriously injured in an attack at Welfen-Gymnasium secondary school in the small town of Schongau, Upper Bavaria, Germany, on July 8, 2026. A 16-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene. Police reported that the suspect was carrying both a knife and a firearm and believe they acted alone.

Authorities confirmed that neither of the girls is in life-threatening condition, though details about other possible victims and the full extent of injuries remain under investigation. A police spokeswoman told AFP news agency that it was unclear what weapon was used, declining to confirm reports of a knife attack.

Bavaria's interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, told German public broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) that he believed the two girls had been stabbed. Herrmann also noted that the suspect had previously received psychiatric treatment and there were unconfirmed indications they were a former student of the school.

Police described the incident as a "rampage" and said a major operation was underway in the area. The Welfen-Gymnasium, founded in 1887, was initially almost exclusively a girls' school.

The identity of the suspect and any potential links to the school have not been confirmed.
