A federal court has held $5 million in a bank account for three years, deposited by lawyers for former President Donald Trump following a 2023 jury verdict that found him liable for sexual abuse and defamation of writer E. Jean Carroll.

Carroll and her legal team have been actively seeking the release of the funds since the Supreme Court declined on June 29 to hear Trump's appeal, a decision that appeared to finalize the matter. However, Trump has filed a request for the Supreme Court to reconsider its refusal and, in a filing on Tuesday night, argued that the federal judge overseeing the case should delay disbursing the awarded damages until the Court reviews the matter again.

Carroll has been granted an expedited schedule by the judge to receive the $5 million in damages plus accrued interest since the case's conclusion in 2023. The original jury verdict was reached unanimously in under three hours, concluding that Trump more likely than not sexually abused Carroll during a 1990s encounter.

Trump contends that constitutional claims in this case overlap with another pending matter and has asked the Supreme Court to weigh in on both. The Supreme Court's earlier decision to decline hearing the $5 million case involved arguments about whether the trial judge admitted inadmissible evidence.

The situation remains fluid as Carroll pushes for payment while Trump continues legal efforts to delay disbursement.
