A federal judge has ordered the immediate release of $5.8 million to E. Jean Carroll, following a jury verdict that held former President Donald Trump liable for sexually abusing her in 1996 and subsequently defaming her.

The ruling comes after a legal battle in which Carroll accused Trump of sexual abuse and defamation. NBC News legal analyst Danny Cevallos provided explanations of the judge's decision.

This payment represents the damages awarded to Carroll as a result of the jury's findings.
