Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) remains in rehabilitation care and is not yet medically cleared to return to in-person work at the Capitol following a fall at his home on June 14, 2026. His office released a health update on Monday, July 27, stating that he is continuing a strenuous physical therapy regimen designed to rebuild strength and reduce the risk of future falls.

McConnell said in a statement, “I’m still working hard to get back to my full schedule of work in the Senate and in Kentucky, keeping up with intense physical therapy per my doctors’ orders. Unfortunately, that means I won’t be able to make it to Fancy Farm, Kentucky this Saturday.” He expressed regret about missing the annual picnic, adding, “There’s no place I’d rather be” and that he is “looking forward to getting back to the Senate and to Kentucky soon.”

The Office of the Attending Physician confirmed that McConnell “continues his recovery from a fall at home in June” and is not yet cleared to leave the rehab facility. Since his hospital discharge, he has engaged in multiple daily therapy sessions. McConnell reported he was briefly unconscious during the fall but did not suffer a heart attack, stroke, tumors, or hemorrhages.

According to an NBC News review, McConnell has missed the last 38 votes on the Senate floor. The Senate is scheduled to be in session for the next two weeks before the summer recess. His office also released a recent photo of McConnell with his wife, Elaine Chao.

No timeline has been provided for his return to the Senate.
