Seattle Police Chief Shon Barnes came under scrutiny after being out of town during a mass shooting at the Bite of Seattle annual food festival on Sunday evening, July 27, 2026. The shooting at Seattle Center resulted in three deaths and four injuries when up to three shooters fired on each other, with innocent bystanders caught in the crossfire.

Barnes was attending the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives' annual conference in Dallas, Texas, at the time of the shooting. This absence sparked criticism, especially given that Barnes' wife and children live in Chicago, raising questions about his frequent travel and time away from Seattle.

Responding to the criticism, Barnes stated, "Any reports that I am gone every weekend are grossly misstated. I don't have that kind of money. I'm here in Seattle. I love the neighborhood. I love my community, they love me." He also said, "I have been here working as hard as I can for this city from the day I got here, you got that?" and added, "I wish that I had a crystal ball and we could schedule gun violence, but we can’t."

During a vigil held a day after the shooting, Barnes spoke publicly about the tragedy. Meanwhile, Democratic Socialist Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson said, "We believe this teenager opened fire in the crowd, but details are still under investigation."

Authorities have identified a third suspect in the deadly shooting, with one alleged gunman found dead.

The incident has intensified discussions about leadership and public safety in Seattle amid ongoing concerns about gun violence.
