A defense company, Mithril Defense, will begin equipping schools with drones designed to stop active shooters at the start of the 2026-2027 academic year. Multiple schools in Colorado, Florida, and Georgia are set to pilot the program.

Founded in 2023 by a U.S. veteran, Mithril Defense specializes in small, non-lethal drones for security applications in schools, shipping, oil and gas, and defense sectors. Their school-focused drones, called Campus Guardian Angels, can fly at speeds of 50 miles per hour indoors and up to 100 miles per hour outdoors, aiming to reach active shooters within 15 seconds. As a last resort, the drones can ram individuals at speeds of 60 miles per hour.

Three Florida school districts announced in November 2025 their participation in the drone pilot program, with Florida allocating approximately $557,000 for implementation. John Adams Academy Douglas County, a public tuition-free classical charter school in Colorado, has also joined the initiative alongside schools in Florida and Georgia.

Campus Guardian Angel’s website reports that there have been 1,000 school shootings in the past three years—ten times more than a decade ago—with 800 individuals killed or wounded during those incidents.
