India has extended an invitation to Bangladeshi Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to attend the 18th BRICS summit scheduled for September 12 and 13 in New Delhi. This invitation is viewed as a chance to improve ties between the two neighboring countries following a turbulent period in their relationship.

If Rahman accepts, it will mark his first direct meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi since becoming Bangladesh’s leader after elections in February 2026.

BRICS is an association of leading emerging economies including Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Although Bangladesh is not a BRICS member, it has been invited as a special guest due to its current chairmanship of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).

A Bangladesh Foreign Ministry official confirmed to ANI that Dhaka has received the invitation and forwarded it to the prime minister’s office.
