Hangzhou Library, located in Zhejiang province in eastern China, is affectionately known as the country’s “warmest library” for its inclusive approach to visitors. It was the first library in China to allow readers free access without requiring a library card.
Since initiating this inclusive policy in 2008, the library has welcomed beggars and scavengers, even featuring a statue commemorating one such regular visitor. When concerns were raised by a reader about the presence of these individuals, library director Chu Shuqing responded, “I have no right to reject them, but you have the right to leave.”
Chu Shuqing was known for his deep love of history and politics, and a librarian recalled that despite being covered in stains, his hands were always remarkably clean before he immersed himself in reading.
This approach highlights Hangzhou Library’s commitment to openness and community support, making it a unique cultural institution in China.
