Mackenzie Phillips, known for her role as Julie Cooper on the CBS sitcom "One Day at a Time," recently opened up about the circumstances surrounding her abrupt exit from the show in 1980. Speaking at Fanboy Expo Knoxville in Tennessee, Phillips revealed that a "morals clause" in her contract played a significant role in her departure.

The 66-year-old actress explained that her struggles with substance abuse led to additional provisions in her contract. She indicated that if producers suspected she was violating these terms, it could lead to consequences, which ultimately contributed to her being written off the series.

Phillips starred on "One Day at a Time" from 1975 until 1980 before her character was removed following her firing, according to People magazine. She later returned for a guest arc before leaving the series permanently in 1983.

The show, which aired from 1975 to 1984, also featured co-stars Bonnie Franklin and Valerie Bertinelli. Phillips has also shared that during the sitcom's breaks, she and Bertinelli drank wine and used cocaine.
