Ferran Torres, the Spanish footballer who scored the decisive goal in Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final on July 19, addressed his decision to wear a red hat inspired by former U.S. President Donald Trump during Spain’s homecoming parade.

In a Monday interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on August 3, 2026, Torres described the moment as “funny” and emphasized that it was "not about politics." When asked about the red “Make Spain Great Again” hat, Torres said, “Honestly, I don’t know about politics. It was just to be able to see Spain again on the top, winning the World Cup.”

The White House shared a video of Torres wearing the Trump-inspired hat during the parade on July 21, captioning it, “Everyone wants in on the movement.” Conservative commentator Eric Daugherty commented, “FREAKING EPIC! Spain might be run by a socialist but PATRIOTS are still alive and well!”

Torres currently plays for FC Barcelona, with his contract expiring in June 2027, according to Forbes.
