About 34.3% of students who applied through Hong Kong’s Joint University Programmes Admissions System (Jupas) secured places at local universities or subsidised diploma courses this year, marking a slight drop from last year amid stiffer competition.
The Jupas office reported that 15,619 applicants out of 45,545 were offered places, reflecting a 5.3% increase in total applicants compared to last year’s 43,269 applicants, of whom 15,808 secured places.
When the Jupas results were announced on Wednesday, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) each said they had offered places to half of the 24 top scorers in this year’s Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) examinations. Twelve top scorers secured spots in CUHK’s medicine programmes, while HKU offered places to the other 12 across its medicine, government and law, and business administration and law programmes.
Additionally, one top scorer has chosen to study computer science at the University of Oxford.
These results highlight the competitive landscape of tertiary education admissions in Hong Kong this year.
