An independent UN human rights expert has expressed support for the ongoing legal proceedings in the United States to extradite Andrew and Tristan Tate to the United Kingdom. The Tate brothers, known as “manosphere” bloggers and former professional kickboxers, face serious allegations of violence against women and girls.
Reem Alsalem, Special Rapporteur on violence against women and girls, called the case an important step towards accountability. She said the proceedings “offer renewed hope that justice may finally be achieved through effective international cooperation.” Alsalem noted that this action follows years during which women’s testimonies and experiences were often ignored or dismissed by law enforcement and prosecutorial authorities.
The Tate brothers were arrested in Miami, Florida, on 18 July 2026 following an extradition request from the UK. They remain in US custody while challenging the request and face 59 criminal charges, including rape, sexual assault, facilitating trafficking for sexual exploitation, assault, and offenses related to indecent images of a child and major pornography. Separate criminal proceedings are ongoing in Romania concerning allegations including human trafficking and trafficking of minors.
Alsalem emphasized the urgency of justice given the scale of the alleged offenses and the brothers’ global influence in promoting misogyny and harmful models of masculinity. She warned that perpetrators often exploit delays, fragmented jurisdictional responses, and their wealth or influence to evade accountability, stressing that “no one should be above the law, regardless of their status, influence or international reach.”
She also called for the justice process to expand beyond individual responsibility to include those who aided, abetted, and profited from the Tate brothers’ criminal enterprise involving grooming, exploitation, and abuse of women and girls.
Additionally, Alsalem transmitted information to the governments of Romania and the United Kingdom, with copies to the United States, regarding the poor handling of allegations made by a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted by Andrew Tate in Romania in 2018.
