Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after being hospitalized for over 50 days. His latest hospitalization followed a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, where he was briefly unconscious. During rehabilitation, McConnell developed pneumonia, which extended his absence from the Senate.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health challenges, the retiring senator vowed to return to his Senate role and continue receiving medical attention at home. He added, “On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business.”

McConnell’s prolonged absence has drawn criticism over transparency about his condition and concerns about Kentucky’s representation. His absence notably impacted Senate proceedings, as the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, after Democrats unanimously opposed it.
