Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after spending more than 50 days hospitalized.

McConnell's latest hospitalization followed a fall in his Washington home on June 14, during which he was briefly unconscious. While undergoing rehabilitation, he developed pneumonia, contributing to his extended absence from the Senate.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a statement to reporters. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health setbacks, the retiring senator pledged to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and continue engaging with his staff and colleagues on Senate business during the state work period.

McConnell has faced criticism over the lack of transparency about his condition and concerns that Kentucky remained unrepresented during his hospitalization. His absence notably impacted Senate proceedings; the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, after Democrats unanimously voted against it.
