Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after spending more than 50 days hospitalized.

McConnell's latest hospitalization stemmed from a fall at his Washington home on June 14, where he was briefly unconscious. During his rehabilitation, he developed pneumonia, which contributed to his extended absence from Senate activities.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health setbacks, the retiring senator pledged to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and remain engaged with his staff and colleagues on Senate business during the state work period.

McConnell's prolonged absence drew criticism over transparency regarding his condition and concerns about Kentucky's representation in the Senate. His absence notably affected Senate operations, including the failure of the Senate Agriculture Committee to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, after Democrats unanimously opposed it.
