Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after spending more than 50 days hospitalized.

McConnell's recent hospitalization followed a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, during which he was briefly unconscious. While undergoing rehabilitation, he developed pneumonia, contributing to his extended absence from Senate activities.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

The retiring senator pledged to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and to stay engaged with his staff and Senate colleagues on important business during the state work period.

McConnell's prolonged absence has drawn criticism over transparency about his health and concerns about Kentucky's representation. His absence notably impacted Senate proceedings; the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, after Democrats unanimously opposed it.
