Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after being hospitalized for over 50 days. His latest hospitalization followed a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, during which he was briefly unconscious. While undergoing rehabilitation, McConnell developed pneumonia, contributing to his extended absence from the Senate.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health setbacks, the retiring senator vowed to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and continue engaging with his staff and Senate colleagues on important business during the state work period.

McConnell has faced criticism over the lack of transparency regarding his condition and concerns about Kentucky’s representation during his absence. His absence notably impacted Senate operations; the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, after Democrats unanimously voted against it.
