Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after being hospitalized for over 50 days. His latest hospitalization followed a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, where he was briefly unconscious. During rehabilitation, McConnell developed pneumonia, which contributed to his prolonged absence from the Senate.

“Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home,” McConnell said in a statement. “Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

The retiring senator vowed to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and continue engaging with his staff and colleagues on Senate business. McConnell’s absence has drawn criticism for the lack of transparency about his condition and concerns over Kentucky’s representation.

Notably, the Senate Agriculture Committee was unable to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, due to McConnell’s absence, with Democrats unanimously voting against the bill.
