Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate following more than 50 days of hospitalization. His latest hospital stay began after a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, during which he was briefly unconscious. While undergoing rehabilitation, McConnell developed pneumonia, contributing to his prolonged absence from the Senate.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health setbacks, the retiring senator vowed to continue his Senate responsibilities, stating he will maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and remain engaged with his staff and colleagues on Senate business.

McConnell’s absence has drawn criticism for the lack of transparency about his condition and concerns over Kentucky’s representation. His absence notably impacted Senate proceedings, as the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, after Democrats unanimously opposed it.
