Republican Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell announced on Thursday, August 6th, 2026, that he plans to return to the Senate after being hospitalized for over 50 days. His latest hospitalization followed a fall at his Washington home on June 14th, during which he was briefly unconscious. While undergoing rehabilitation, McConnell developed pneumonia, contributing to his prolonged absence from the Senate.

In a statement to reporters, McConnell said, “Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff.”

Despite his health challenges, the retiring senator pledged to maintain an intensive physical therapy regimen at home and to stay actively engaged with his staff and Senate colleagues on important business during the state work period.

McConnell’s absence has drawn criticism over the lack of transparency about his condition and concerns about Kentucky’s representation in the Senate. His absence notably affected legislative proceedings; the Senate Agriculture Committee failed to advance the Republican Farm Bill on Tuesday, August 4th, after Democrats unanimously voted against it.
