The German energy company RWE has reached a $1.22 billion settlement with the US government to relinquish its offshore wind leases off the coasts of New York, California, and Louisiana. This agreement, announced on Thursday, marks the fifth deal under the Donald Trump administration offering payouts to energy companies in exchange for abandoning renewable energy projects and shifting investments toward fossil fuels.
RWE stated that after careful consideration, it determined there is no path forward to permit these offshore wind projects in the US for the foreseeable future. The company initially secured the leases with a long-term commitment to develop offshore wind capacity.
RWE had paid $1.1 billion for its New York lease in a 2022 auction held by the Joe Biden administration, while its leases in Louisiana and California cost a combined $163 million, according to Reuters. The settlement resolves RWE US Offshore’s legal claims and provides $1.22 billion in settlement funds, allowing the company to direct resources toward energy projects that can be advanced with certainty.
As part of the deal, RWE will invest $900 million to acquire a 16% stake in an unnamed Louisiana liquified natural gas (LNG) project.
This latest agreement brings the total taxpayer money spent on terminating offshore wind projects to nearly $4 billion. Additionally, the administration has allocated up to $1.1 billion to support coal, a move critics argue benefits political allies while increasing energy costs for working Americans, especially as tensions with Iran contribute to rising fuel prices.
Sources also report environmental violations related to illegal discharges of pollutants into waterways and failures in monitoring compliance.
