Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old Fijian rugby player with the Japanese second-division team Kyushu KV, died on Friday morning, August 7th, 2026, after being hospitalized with symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. Vunilagi was taken to a hospital in the southern city of Fukuoka following a team practice on Monday, August 3rd, when temperatures reached a high of 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

Kyushu KV confirmed the circumstances surrounding Vunilagi’s hospitalization and subsequent death. The incident occurred amid a period of intense heat in Japan, where close to 18,600 people were hospitalized for heatstroke between July 20 and 26, with 45 pronounced dead on arrival, according to the fire and disaster management agency.

In response to rising temperatures, authorities have adjusted the timing of several cultural and sporting events, including the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya, which held its final summer edition recently.

This tragic event highlights ongoing concerns about heat-related health risks in Japan during the summer months.
