Saimoni Vunilagi, a 26-year-old Fijian rugby player with Japan's second-division team Kyushu KV, died on Friday, August 7th, 2026, after being hospitalized with symptoms consistent with severe heatstroke. Vunilagi was taken to a hospital in the southern city of Fukuoka following a team practice on Monday, August 3rd, when temperatures reached 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).

Kyushu KV confirmed the circumstances surrounding Vunilagi's hospitalization and subsequent death. The incident comes amid a period of intense heat in Japan, where close to 18,600 people were hospitalized for heatstroke between July 20th and 26th, with 45 pronounced dead on arrival, according to the fire and disaster management agency.

Authorities in Japan have recently adjusted the timing of various cultural and sporting events to mitigate heat risks, including the World Cosplay Summit in Nagoya, which held its final summer edition last weekend.
