A magnitude-7.4 earthquake struck parts of Colombia and Ecuador on Monday, August 10, 2026, resulting in at least 20 deaths and significant structural damage in Colombia.

The Colombian Geological Service and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported the quake's epicenter was located about 100 kilometers underground in western Colombia. The tremors were felt across nine departments and all 32 departmental capitals in Colombia, prompting evacuations and damage reports.

The National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) confirmed receiving damage reports from multiple regions. Injuries and notable destruction were reported in the Pacific Colombian province of Choco. Alejandro Eder, mayor of Cali, a nearby city, stated that at least 20 buildings collapsed, trapping people inside.

Colombian President Abelardo De La Espriella has taken direct leadership of the emergency response, requesting a detailed report from the UNGRD director on urgent needs. He also plans to visit Pereira to support affected communities and oversee the government's response.

The earthquake was also felt in neighboring Ecuador, and local officials across multiple provinces reported damage and collapsed buildings. Authorities have warned residents about potential aftershocks.

This event follows two major earthquakes in Venezuela in late June 2026, which resulted in over 5,000 deaths.
