Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate from Michigan, argued that "toxic masculinity" is at the core of football. In a 2021 Substack post responding to the resignation of then-Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, El-Sayed said the sport's culture is rife with racism, homophobia, and misogyny.
Gruden resigned after emails containing language deemed racist, homophobic, and misogynistic became public. El-Sayed wrote, “The toxic masculinity at the heart of America’s most popular sport — and men’s sports culture more generally — is way deeper than a few emails or a Jay-Z turnaround,” according to The Midwesterner.
El-Sayed, who played football in high school, stated that football is filled with these negative cultural elements. He suggested that millions of Americans who enjoy football are not merely fans of the game but are participating in a system he views as flawed due to "toxic masculinity."
These comments have sparked debate about the cultural issues within American football and the broader sports community.
