The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reaffirmed its support for FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who is currently facing criticism over his failed attempt to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors. CAF President Patrice Motsepe stated that Infantino’s future should be decided only through the March 2027 FIFA presidential election.

This stance comes after Ireland’s football federation became the latest to withdraw its earlier support for Infantino. The governing bodies of European football (UEFA), North and Central America (CONCACAF), and Asia (AFC) have jointly criticized Infantino, accusing him of placing himself above the collective trust of FIFA members.

Motsepe defended Infantino by saying there was no breach of rules regarding the World Cup sell-off proposals, as these would have required final approval from FIFA members. However, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) announced that following a board meeting, it rescinded the letter of support it had supplied earlier this year.
