On Wednesday, August 12th, 2026, a man killed his wife and their child inside a small in-home daycare center they owned in Hopkins, Minnesota, before taking his own life, according to police.
The Hopkins Police Department responded to a stabbing report around 9 a.m. at a residence on the 200 block of Tyler Avenue North in the Minneapolis suburb. Upon arrival, officers found two adults and a child deceased.
Authorities preliminarily identified the deceased man as the assailant in this domestic-related homicide and confirmed there are no outstanding suspects or ongoing threats to the public.
Brent Johnson, Hopkins police chief, stated that another parent witnessed the attack while dropping off a child at Brown Bear Childcare and called the police. He described the incident as "no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call."
All six other children present at the home during the incident were safely evacuated and reunited with their parents.
Jacob Frey, Minneapolis mayor, expressed condolences, saying, "I know that our hearts and our prayers are with the people of Hopkins and any families that have been impacted."
The daycare center had been found in compliance during inspections in 2023, 2024, and 2025. Johnson noted that killings are a rarity in Hopkins, a city with about 19,000 residents, and that officers were deeply affected by the scene.
